Microsoft will release the core components of its ‘Chakra’ JavaScript engine as open source in January 2016.
Microsoft has opened sourced a piece of software called ChakraCore which is a JavaScript engine that runs in the background of applications on Windows, such as the Edge browser. ChakraCore comes fully loaded with all of the latest technology, making it a valuable resource to the development community.
This is the complete JavaScript engine—the parser, the interpreter, the just-in-time compiler, and the garbage collector along with the API used to embed the engine into applications (as used in Edge). This will have the same performance and capabilities, including asm.js and SIMD support, as well as cutting-edge support for new ECMAScript 2015 language features like the version found in Microsoft’s Windows 10 browser.
Essentially, anyone who uses ChakraCore could make a browser, or other applications, far more easily. It will be made available on GitHub under an MIT open source license in January 2016, with support from Intel, AMD, and NodeSource.
